“Powerful technologies, and AI is no different, are neutral in themselves,” [Hassabis] says. “So it depends on society and humanity. How we decide to share the gains is also going to determine whether it is good or bad for the world.”

In other words: AI will fuck us up if we keep developing it under capitalism, so we better get that revolution started.

@Antanicus The guy selling AI solutions gets the last (aggravating) word too, "“Either we are going to need an exponential improvement in human behaviour, so we become more collaborative and less selfish and short term, or we have got to have an exponential improvement in technology to solve the big problems we are creating for ourselves. I don’t see much evidence for the former.”

We need his AI to solve the problems created by our behavior because we can't change our behavior?

@cstanhope
1. Create a massive propaganda machine to disincentivise behavioural change
2. Tell people they are too stupid and you need AI to control them
3. Profit

Isn't capitalism beautiful?

@Antanicus
1. Capitalism needs hyperindividualism in order to survive

2. Virtual things are cheaper and easier to control than physical things, capitalism wants to sell more virtual things

3. You can control people better if they are connected to the virtual things they "buy", but not really connected to each other in any material way.

4. You get manageable backlashes or no backlash at all if you keep people divided and unable to freely associate.

@Antanicus @haitch

I find it galling that Hassabis, who sold his company to Google / Alphabet and is happy to play his part in subjecting us all to new levels of surveillance capitalist abuse, says that it depends on society and humanity for how this will play out.

@mchlmc
Indeed, if Mr. Hassabis is so concerned about mankind, he better leave Google at once and take all the talent he can with him and devote himself to an open source AI project
