@MoiraEve, thank you. ElMo's take over is not my only motivation. My motivations are well described here " moving to Mastodon can create the opportunity for a new culture with new habits, manners and etiquette. A culture that's hopefully less toxic, less status-driven, less clout-grubbing and less conducive to the 'braindead microphone'.

@stefanherzog welcome!!! Check this group I created to aggregate info about #CollectiveIntelligence: @collectiveintelligence
Mention it when tooting about the topic, and it will spread to the followers!
(Need to publicize it a bit more, though!)

Current mood. Painted this back in 2019.

Feeling incredibly sleepy, but got no choice but to power through my tasks for the day.

How is everyone doing?

The LSE Digital Ethnography Collective Reading List is a *profound* resource for scholars in STS, media studies, digital sociology, and the like.

Kudos to @ZoeGlatt for managing it! ✨

A new #Mastodon search engine, @fedisearch went up several days ago, only to disappear, seemingly under pressure from other users. It’s an interesting situation. And personally troubling for me.

For context, the overall vibe on Mastodon is critical of search engines, as tools that can be used to target hate speech. It’s one of the prime examples of the network being designed foremost with harm reduction in mind.

The problem with this is that there seems to be little weighting of opportunities vs costs. Are all search cases negative? Has anyone done any design study to think this through?

And more importantly, how was the decision made? One of the responses to the announcement about Fedisearch states that “most of Fediverse does not want this”. I see this often in discussions about different functionalities (quote tweets!) - users speak on behalf “the community”.

I hope that as Mastodon develops, more sophisticated decision making models will develop. Currently, when people say “the community”, it’s unclear how and where they observe it, and how the community’s collective position is determined.

I’m in Pretoria, South Africa visiting UNISA, one of our largest #moodle users with 378,000 students. They took me to the Freedom Park museum of African history, which I highly recommend if you’re ever here. This was one quote I saw today:

Età media dell'utenza #Mastodon italiana

L'ho visto in un'istanza anglofona, proviamo a farlo anche qui che sono curioso (ovviamente non è esclusivo per mastodon.uno: vorrei intercettare l'utenza italofona in generale)

The lesson to take from the big layoffs at Twitter and Facebook is this: "The job will never love you back." No matter how much effort you put in, no matter how clever you are, no matter how long you've committed yourself to $COMPANY, when push comes to shove, you're just a replaceable part in the machine.

Keep your weekends and your evenings. Leave your bugs at work. Your time is for you, and your boss won't send you flowers.

I hear new people noting how chill, tolerant, and pleasant Mastodon is.

Mastodon isn’t chill or tolerant or pleasant. It’s a tool… a foundation on which to create and maintain a culture.

It’s those who’ve been on Mastodon, run servers, and served as admins who did the hard work and created the culture you now enjoy.

Now, it’s your turn. The only way it stays tolerant and chill is by us doing the work to keep it that way.

A good example of, “Be the change you wish to see in the world.”

@nwin Sure! I can't claim credit for curation - these are from Ken Fleischmann's Ethics of AI class.

@pettter @asayeed @kfort @emilymbender @timnitGebru yes, it is the current narrative of the '#AI capital' to push for a focus on the positive advances, neglecting the risks. I acknowledge that there are many benefits, but these are definitely not shared equally. Moreover, it is urgent to discuss #tradeoffs, who is deciding on these and who is not at the table.

non sapevo che Unipol avesse participato nella acquisizione di Twitter e che il Signor Salvini avesse invitato ElMo a fare affari in Italia 😭 😩
