If you download your Twitter archive it arrives wrapped as a static HTML page, which is not very useful for doing anything with, and worse: it requires the original account to be still active to do useful things like enlarge the images since they use t.co links.

So here's a Python script to convert a Twitter archive to markdown or other formats: https://github.com/timhutton/twitter-archive-parser

There was once a dream of a decentralised web.

As recently as a decade ago we had a still very active blogosphere, connected via blogrolls and RSS. Specialised web forums were still mainstream and messenger apps could largely interoperate.

Centralised social media slowly ate that dream. It had plenty of positives, but it pulled more and more people away from the open web and into corporate walled gardens.

Some people kept the dream of decentralisation alive. And now you are here.

A fine ottobre sono stati resi noti i conti relativi al terzo trimestre 2022 delle grosse società tecnologiche quotate in borsa, e sono stati disastrosi.

Sia nel caso di Meta che di Google, il fattore determinante è stato il calo delle entrate che arrivano dalle inserzioni pubblicitarie, che sono ancora la principale fonte di reddito per questo settore. Ciò rappresenta un importante punto di svolta, in quanto scardina l'idea che la crescita del settore tecnologico non si fermerà mai.

it seems to me Mastodon has reached a critical mass, so it will exist in the foreseeable future as an alternative social media

Twitter will need to invent something extremely compelling, not yet thought of, in order to prompt people to pay, vis-á-vis a free alternative

this will push the adoption of activitypub (the underlying tech) and more services could emerge confronting other social media
