@nikadubrovsky I'm unfortunately ill-informed about Russia in the first half of the 19th century. (And most of the second.)
On the other hand, @davidgraeber used to say that all immigrants are true anthropologists, for they have to interpret a foreign culture not as a leisurely exercise, but to survive in it.

Any person who has been nomadic through their life circumstances does the same.
Having moved from Las Vegas to Spokane to rural Eastern Washington, and been a part of many smaller communities within those places, a significant part of my time and energy has been spent trying to pick apart and navigate the interface between my own understanding of the world, and that of everyone around me, wherever I am.
