Possibly the most frightening talent of the brown bear is an uncanny ability to blend seamlessly into the environment in an almost chameleon-like manner, allowing them to easily surprise their unsuspecting prey.

At my day job I get to work on larger networks in a very off-hands way, remotely logging into machines from the comfort of my home and configuring stuff.
The on-site buildup and teardown of the event network is the exact opposite. Lots of physical work. All the configuration and planning is already done before-hand.
This was only the second time I had to operate a fiber cleaner and plug in fibers into optics.

One surprising fact about the #cccamp23 network is that all the equipment between the datacenter and a particular datenklo is passive/unpowered/analog.
The light signal is passed through multiple other datenklos, being converted from multi-core to single-core fiber and then splitted out by light wavelength by very carefully manufactured prisms and the likes. This means even when one of the datenklos in the row has a power outage, the remaining datenklos will still have a working uplink.
