The FBI wiretapped Martin Luther King, Jr.'s phone for over a month, initially for "on a trial basis" and then extended to surveil all aspects of his life. This was under the COINTELPRO program, which primarily targeted leftists and civil rights groups using surveillance intended for terrorists, and illegal acts of covert violence including assassination. They even went so far as to arm the Minutemen--an anti-communist right-wing extremist group. Although it was formally abolished in 1971, its tactics are still used. The new FBI label "Black Identity Extremists" opens the door even further for COINTELPRO tactics to continue as a reactionary force to civil rights. Be careful out there, comrades--but never afraid!
