Some thoughts on diaspora* - why I am a new user to that longest running federated social media platform, and what it will take to keep it from dying off:

diaspora* social networkI am someone that is going against trend and actually am a new user...I am someone that is going against trend and actually am a new user of Diaspora, and intend to self host a pod, at least for my own use and possibly any family and friends I can convince to use the platform, once I figure out port forwarding for my Yunhost server I just got running. I came to Diaspora as part of my attempt to migrate fully off of corporate controlled social media, being a former heavy user of Facebook, that is now trying to stay logged off of Meta. And while the likes of Mastodon and Lemmy satisfy my use of social media as a form of rss feed, reposting articles of interest and writing short opinions for interests like politics and tech, they definitely do not fulfill my desires to be able to do long form posts, or to share personal news and photos targeted towards a select group of family and friends. And those latter things are something Diaspora most certainly has the ability to do, with its "Aspects" making it easy towards those ends. The issue I've found is t...

Ich überlege, #friendica auszuprobieren. Ist das wie bei Mastodon, dass ein selbst gehosteter Server sich nur mit den Instanzen föderiert, mit denen ich (bzw. die User auf der Instanz) auch Kontakte habe- sprich: etwas schwieriger mit der Reichweite? Oder ist das egal? Ich hätte Lust, das selber zu hosten.

I mean, the Fediverse already has Lemmy, KBin, and MBin.

So there's already an ecosystem of pre-built communities out there.

/kbin is dead. Has been since last year. The last instances that haven't moved to Mbin are withering away.

However, in the "Lemmy clone" category, there's also PieFed, and Sublinks is still in development.

Also, the Facebook alternative Friendica ("Facebook alternative" not as in "Facebook clone", but as in "better than Facebook") has had groups since its launch in, 2010, five and a half years before Mastodon. Hubzilla has had groups since 2012 when it still was a Friendica fork named Red. (streams) (2021) and Forte (2024) have groups, too. All four are part of the same software family, created by the same developer. And interacting with their groups from Mastodon is somewhat smoother than interacting with a Lemmy community.

On Friendica, a group is simply another user account, but with different settings: In "Mastodon speak", it automatically boosts any DM sent to it to all its followers. In reality, it's a little more complicated because, unlike Mastodon, Friendica has a concept of threaded conversations. (No, seriously, Mastodon doesn't have it. If you think Mastodon has it, use Friendica for a year or two as your only daily driver, and then think again.)

Likewise, on Hubzilla, (streams) and Forte, it's another channel with similar settings.

Die Ereignisse in den USA machen eines immer deutlicher: wir sollten uns nicht auf zentralisierte Dienste verlassen. Föderalisierte Dienste wie die des #Fediverse (#Pixelfed, #Mastodon, #Friendica, uvm) sind die Zukunft, um resiliente Infrastrukturen und (sichere) soziale Netzwerke zu schaffen.

Unter anderem deshalb habe ich über den Jahreswechsel eine eigene Mastodon-Instanz unter ciclista.social gestartet - schaut gerne vorbei =)

🏕️ my adventures in #selfhosting - day 104 (pride edition) 👷‍♀️

Good morning Fedi friends!

Aw pride is a powerful thing.

I'd like to think that I'm pretty zen and detached and successfully suppressing my ego... but when it comes to things I'm passionate about (read: tech, self-hosting) I cannot let things go.

I had a very very sweet shout-out on a Fediverse podcast last week... but said shout-out mentioned my self-hosting issues and that maybe self-hosting isn't for everyone. I felt that I had to correct the record (even if the mention came with the nicest intention)... because I have ZERO issues self-hosting #GoToSocial, #Friendica and #Pixelfed (thanks to the magic of #YunoHost). All my troubles had to do with #Ghost. (And Ghost is wonderful, it's not related to it, just external circumstances).

So, determined to defend my honor (ha!) on Friday I achieved the impossible: all by myself, following guides I found online, I managed to install #Apache and #Varnish on my VPS and connected Varnish to Ghost. My site was already fast, now it's BLAZING fast.

So I'm giving it another go, moving from Ghost (Pro) to my self-hosted Ghost installation. I turned off subscriptions on https://blog.elenarossini.com... next step is disconnecting the subdomain DNS (a CNAME record) from Ghost... and redirecting traffic to my new blog (https://news.elenarossini.com).

I know how to code things in NGINX for the redirect to work (I think, via guides I found online).

My big question is: how do I tweak my old DNS records for https://blog.elenarossini.com so that NGINX on my self-hosted site https://news.elenarossini.com will correctly pick up the traffic requests? Do I need to set up A and AAAA records for the subdomain blog to point to my VPS with the self-hosted Ghost blog? Any advice would be greatly appreciated! 🙏​

Oh and I learned my lesson and - unlike last time - I am making big changes on a Monday morning, when I have the whole workweek ahead of me (instead of a Friday afternoon 1 hour before picking up my child from nursery school). You live and learn! 😅​

@abominabledrh Over the past few years i've had various #Friendica instances [various servers (i do not self host)]. Some have been better than others, but all of them drove me bonkers with their latency. It was commonplace that posts i'd send could take minuteS to finish sending [vs instant in every Masto instance i've used], new posts arriving would often be minuteS behind in Masto [& for the worst instances, frequently several hours out of date!!!]. Also, two of the instances eventually failed with corrupted databases & so the instances permanently closed, another recently went offline for many days with a corrupted database & eventually could only be restored from an old backup [thus losing all recent data], another two instances were chronically unreliable for hours or several days at a time. All these PITA issues sucked the pleasure away for me, & were a major reason i eventually returned to Masto, despite the many advantages that Friendica does have. It's a pity.

Ich brauche Eure Hilfe.
Hab' mir auf meinem Yunohost eine eigene Friendica Instanz gegönnt, installiert mit meinem YNH Admin User mit dem ich mich auch dort anmelden kann - als Admin wie ich erwartete.
Nun kann ich das Friendica Admin Panel aber nirgends finden.
Kann mir bitte jemand einen Screenshot schicken wo das erscheinenden müßte, sonst müßte ich neu starten.

Good morning Fedi friends!

It's been 99 days since I started self-hosting my own Fediverse instances. Crazy how time flies!

I've been a bit absent from here this week because I started exploring the world of #PeerTube from the POV of a creator.

I just set up my own account on #MakerTube - so that I can write a guide that is accessible to many (as opposed to skipping this step and going straight to self-hosting).

Anyway, here is my PeerTube account: https://makertube.net/a/elena/video-channels

I have been able to follow it from #Mastodon and #Friendica without a problem, but I keep getting an error message when I try to subscribe with my #GoToSocial username. The exact message: "Cannot fetch information from this remote account." Does anybody have the same issue? (as in: people on GoToSocial, can you subscribe to PeerTube channels?)
