Some humans dream of starting human colonies on other planets, but what if those distant worlds have native life? Big Think's Ethan Siegel looks at the ethics of such colonization, laws that would apply in space as much as on Earth, the relevance of the "Star Trek" universe's "prime directive," and more. "Our ignorance is so great — and there are so many who value both fundamental knowledge and the personal safety of themselves and others so cheaply — that I frequently fear that it will be the most reckless among us, rather than those among us who carefully consider and scrupulously reckon with these issues, who will ultimately be the first to engage in genuine colonization efforts," he cautions.

Big ThinkAsk Ethan: What right do we have to colonize other worlds? In all the known Universe, Earth is the only planet known to have native life. What should guide us in expanding humanity beyond our world?

I am deeply saddened by Pope Francis' passing. Reading his environmental encyclical "Laudato Si'" was a life-changing experience for me. It lays out in clear, uncompromising prose the combined socio-ecological crises we all face. It is a document for everyone - Christian and non-Christian alike. Worth a read if you have never picked it up (link below).

Rest in peace, Papa Francisco 🙏

The main issue with freeing the kids, is that kids cannot vote. This is not un-doable. With slaves, slaves could not vote. But there were enough non-slaves that agreed that slaves should be freed. So it passed through. With women rights until some point in time women couldn't vote too. But there were e...

"An era of cut-throat competition, followed by a rapid process of amalgamation, has thrown an enormous quantity of wealth into the hands of a small number of captains of industry. No luxury of living to which this class could attain kept pace with its rise of income, and a process of automatic saving set in upon an unprecedented scale." - J. A. Hobson "Imperialism a Study"

Sounds familiar...

From an old book I found via Jason Stanley's "Erasing HIstory"
Very good treatise on anti-colonialism.

"No mere array of facts and figures adduced to illustrate the economic nature of the new Imperialism will suffice to dispel the popular delusion that the use of national force to secure new markets by annexing fresh tracts of territory is a sound and a necessary policy for an advanced industrial country like Great Britain. It has indeed been proved that recent annexations of tropical countries, procured at great expense, have furnished poor and precarious markets, that our aggregate trade with our colonial possessions is virtually stationary, and that our most profitable and progressive trade is with rival industrial nations, whose territories we have no desire to annex, whose markets we cannot force, and whose active antagonism we are provoking by our expansive policy."

"The direct influence exercised by great financial houses in “high politics” is supported by the control which they exercise over the body of public opinion through the Press, which, in every “civilised” country, is becoming more and more their obedient instrument." - Imperialism A Study by J.A. Hobson (Book reference from Jason Stanley *Erasing History*.

Once Again. Those that own the media control the propaganda. This book is from 1902.

“The eve of the French Revolution found every wise man in Europe – Lessing, Kant Goethe, Rousseau, Lavater, Condorcet, Priestley, Gibbon, Franklin – more of a citizen of the world than of any particular country. Goethe confessed that he did not know what patriotism was, and was glad to be without it." from John A. Hobson

Gosh, it is charmingly written, and reminds me of tenets of thought I have come across in #geopolitical works like The Rise And Fall Of The Great Powers when they discuss #America

> At first sight there is something surprising in this strange unrest of so many happy men, restless in the midst of abundance. The spectacle itself, however, is as old as the world; the novelty is to see a whole people furnish an exemplification of it.

This is us.

The umbrella Trump abandons, as it won’t fit through the door of Air Force One without him going through the trouble of closing it.

We are this umbrella. Trump won’t bother to do anything for us, nor anyone who isn’t MAGA

We are the umbrella.
