#writerscoffeeclub 3 Apr 'How do you navigate scenes with many characters'

The narrator dominates scenes with many people. In this extract OpenMike has broken the 4th wall and is talking to the reader as if they are a volunteer helper.

Usually, dialogue is just 2 people. If there are 4, then the text alternates between the first 2 talking, then the second 2.

I'm writing for teenagers. Too much complexity is unwelcome.

You soon will! Franklin and Faraday will be here, and Sylvie has arranged for the CopperWolf and the Provost and the Professor to sit on the panel with her tonight. We only do the Talent Night once every quarter, and we usually get a really good turnout. It normally brings together our best performers. Kayt and Conning are regulars, MaxChaos has a slot tonight, that’s a first, and we have some irregular light entertainment which you’ll see later. Not panto, but similar, a bizarre melodrama filling in the gaps between acts. Oh, and leave this space here for the orchestra. The school orchestra! Miss Fortune needs that piano put there, and she needs eight chairs for her pupils, violins and cellos mainly, and one young lad with three kettle drums! copyright © Scott Rochester 2025

Raw frame from Blade Runner and how it looks on my color e-ink "very slow movie player" frame. This thing is impossible to photograph because of how reflective the glass is but it looks amazing in person. The color e-ink really looks so cool / very different from a grid of backlit pixels. Wish I could capture it better!

Watching one of the live action Transformers sequels with a young family member.

One of the many inscrutable design choices in these films is the way they gave the robot versions of some Transformers dangly mechanical beards, or old man hair and croaky voices. Ok, making them serious sci fi action films was never going to work. But surely they could have done better than alien robots modeled on cartoonish human stereotypes.
