Irish authors raise concerns over Meta's alleged AI use

A group of Irish authors has presented a petition to the Department of Trade raising their concerns over the alleged use by Meta of their publications to train its #AI model, Llama 3.

The petition has collected 1,500 signatures and was submitted to Minister of State with special responsibility for AI and digital transformation Niamh Smyth.

The authors have joined forces in a campaign organised by the Irish Writers Union - Aontas Scribhneoirí Éireann - to demand that Meta complys with Irish and European Union #copyright laws in the training of its AI model.

It's not clear what the photographer/archaeologist is claiming here. The BBC mentions their photos were included (verbatim?) in the eBay description. If there was no attribution that's potentially a clear #copyright violation, but it could be solved by removing the photos and has nothing to do with the production or the sale of the replica.

"De fora não se nota, mas dentro da Inspeção Geral de Atividades Culturais (IGAC) há uma a caça à pirataria em curso. Em 2024, a entidade fiscalizadora recebeu 800 denúncias para remoção ou bloqueio de sites e links, com o objetivo de travar a distribuição cópias ilegais em Portugal. Das denúncias resultou o bloqueio de 660 endereços que dão acesso a filmes, jogos, transmissões em direto de futebol e outros desportos, música, jornais ou livros.

Faria sentido pensar que o problema ficaria resolvido, mas 2025 ainda não chegou a meio, e as 313 denúncias já registadas confirmam que a luta contra a cópia ilegal não deverá parar tão depressa, apesar de ter garantido o bloqueio de 71% dos casos reportados. Na associação Fevip, que representa distribuidores e produtores de vídeos e videojogos, fala-se em perdas anuais de 200 milhões de euros. O número fica abaixo das perdas anuais de 250 milhões de euros estimadas pela associação de operadores de telecomunicações Apritel, mas ambas entidades não escondem que têm o objetivo comum de avançar com algo mais efetivo.

“A tecnologia só vai conseguir resolver este problema se começar a identificar quem consome pirataria e avisar que, se continuar a fazer o mesmo um determinado número de vezes, arrisca-se a pagar uma multa. Consumir conteúdos piratas é comparável ao recetador que compra coisas roubadas”, defende António Paulo Santos, diretor-geral da FEVIP. "

Il mio personalissimo parere sulla firme apposte dal fotografo nelle fotografie.

1) Da un punto di vista del copyright vale come la sabbia nel deserto.

2) Se metti la firma perché credi che l'immagine abbia un altissimo valore, probabilmente l'immagine non ha un valore e/o non ha senso mettere una firma per scoraggiare un'eventuale uso non autorizzato.

3) Se sei davvero richiesto e/o famoso non hai bisogno di condividere le foto fuori dal tuo controllo, oppure non c'è bisogno della firma perché si sappia che è tua (o non ti importa più, perché l'immagine vive di vita propria, diffusa da siti specializzati, libri, mostre, ecc).

La penso più o meno allo stesso modo per il watermark: a meno che non sia apposto da un sito su cui la tua foto è in vendita, non ha molto senso secondo me, specie in tempi di IA.

Cosa ne pensate? C'è qualcosa che mi sfugge e mi sono fatto un'idea sbagliata?

Se la usate, perché mettete la vostra firma sulle foto che sviluppate?

Received an email by the #NANOG mailing list in which they raise a pretty concerning thing: Apparently, #Spain started to intercept or nullroute certain IP addresses of #CDN providers. The intent is to fight #piracy during #football matches.

Do the people who pass the list of IP addresses even understand the significance of blocking a bunch of #CDN networks of various providers? Seriously?! It #censors access to tens of thousands of legitimate #websites which is blatantly accepted as a #collateral to help out some shady sports association in their #copyright?

How much shadier can a decision be? Since this is a thing, maybe they can think about taking down entire regions in Spain the next football match?

The amount of collateral damage in the name of copyright is ridiculous. The #EuropeanUnion really has to step-up their game in addressing those concerning developments. I read about multiple such blatant decisions so far. Eyeing at you, #Quad9 and #Sony...
