Bio
strategist, software engineer, entrepreneur, activist ... and I run the Nexus of Privacy newsletter (and @thenexusofprivacy and @thenexusofprivacy). My pinned post has more info about me and links to some of my writing about the fediverses.
I've been on the fediverse for a long time, so you may know me from accounts like @jdp23 @jdp23, @jdp23, and @jdp23@oulipo.social. I'm very excited about GoToSocial, so decided to take the jump and run my own instance! I'm still not completely sure how I'll balance this and my blahaj.zone account -- it's a great community, so I'm certainly not planning on leaving there, but one of the things I really like about the fediverse is the ability to have more than one account. So, we shall see!
The vast majoirty of what I post is unlisted, replies and boosts, so if you're looking at this profile and it seems somewhat empty ... there really is more to me than that š

jump to recentHi!!! Iām a strategist/entrepreneur/software engineer/activist, focusing on the intersection of justice, equity, and software engineering. I also run the Nexus of Privacy newsletter -- https://thenexusofprivacy.net and @nexusofprivacy@infosec.exchange. I've been on the fediverse for a long time, so you may know me from accounts like @jdp23 @jdp23, @jdp23, and @jdp23@oulipo.social. I'm very excited about GoToSocial, so decided to take the jump and run my own instance -- although I'll also be keeping my blahaj.zone account active (it's a great community).
As well as decentralized social networks, privacy and civil rights activism and disinfo fighting, some of my other interests include intersectionality, psytrance and darkwave music, and tarot. I live in Washington state, and over the last few months I've gotten to enjoy some great aurora -- see the attached pic.
I've written about decentralized social networks since 2010. A few highlights
- Lessons (so far) from Mastodon for independent social networks (2017),
- Mastodon, a partial history (DRAFT) (2022)
- A (partial) queer, trans, and non-binary history of Mastodon and the fediverse (2023)
- Don't tell people "it's easy", and seven more things Kbin, Lemmy, and the fediverse can learn from Mastodon
- Should the Fediverse welcome its new surveillance-capitalism overlords? Opinions differ! and Embrace, Extend, and Exploit: Meta's plan for ActivityPub, Mastodon and the Fediverse
- Mastodon and today's ActivityPub Fediverse are unsafe by design and unsafe by default, Blocklists in the fediverse and Steps towards a safer fediverse, three parts of a series-in-progress on Golden opportunities for the fediverse -- and whatever comes next
- Strategies for free fediverses, a work-in-progress for those who want to build fediverses that reject Meta ā and surveillance capitalism more generally
- 5 things white people can do to start making the fediverse less toxic for Black people
- I for one welcome Bluesky, the ATmosphere, BTS ARMY, and millions of Brazilians to the fediverses!

Long post on Bluesky and Blacksky
IMHO the main reason that so much of Black Twitter is currently checking out Bluesky is because of the work Rudy Fraser has done on Blacksky, which includes a starter pack, custom feeds (Blacksky, Blackademics, and Blacksky trending), and moderation service (as well as a personal data store, currently still under development).
Also, in early 2023 Aveta had done a lot of work bringing Black Tech Twitter to Bluesky. There were some major problems with anti-Blackness, and she wound up leaving for quite a while ... still here work should be recognized as a critical foundation.
Rudy's three-part series Blacksky: Expressing the Black Everyday in a New Digital Space from late 2023 sketches his vision, including a different approach to community than I had ever seen before online. And this, from the end of part three is a strong refutation to anybody who says that people going to Bluesky haven't taken into account that it's owned by a VC-funded company:
"Tools like Bluesky and AT Protocol have their own tradeoffs and considerations (what @ntnsndr.in describes as "implicit feudalism" for one) but personally my belief in self-determination extends to my technology use and development. And the opportunity to build out an extensible Black social network that can be controlled by community instead of corporations, that doesn't require being segregated from the broader social space, and reflects the many aspects of the diaspora (not just whatever is trendy at the time or what a corporation is pushing on me) is too important to pass up."
So while I certainly agree that it's wise to be skeptical and even cynical about Bluesky's ownership, and the likelihood that (like VC companies tend to do) that as soon as the money gets tight they'll wind up exploiting their users ... there are good reasons to be there in the short term.
Of course, there are good reasons not to be there too, so I'm not saying everybody should check it out. Make up your own mind! But please please stop sneering at or dismissing people who come to a different conclusion than you do.
US Politics: the most leveraged impact for last-minute donations
With just ten days until Election Day, Black Voters Matter is on the ground in Black communities, mobilizing around critical issues like racial justice, voting rights, economic empowerment, and access to quality healthcare and education. They're phone banking, canvassing, offering rides to the polls, doing GOTV rallies in a dozen key states -- including Georgia, Arizona, North Carolina, Wisconsin, and Michigan.
Helping people vote makes a different up and down the ballot -- the Presidential race isn't the only one that matters! Voting rights organizations operated on a shoestring, and every donation makes a big difference. Donating to BIPOC-led voting rights organizations is the single most leveraged way for your money to have an impact, and Black Voters Matter has done great work for years.
So please join me in supporting Black Voters Matter!
