I hope you like history!

Welcome to the historical town of St Andrews. Featuring the world's 3rd oldest English-speaking university, the ruins of St Andrews clifftop castle, and an otherworldly rock formation east of the town.

There's PLENTY more photos from this day too! Isn't that nice? Just go here -> iancylkowski.com/blog/2025/3/1 👍

@IanCykowski And one of the few castles where you can view the remains of subterranean warfare!

@Infoseepage Aye, I read about this! The mines and countermines?

@IanCykowski Yup, I recently visited another, King John's Castle in Limerick, which similarly involved undermining to try to breach the walls.

@IanCykowski Another cool one is Rochester castle, where King John built a tunnel under one corner of the huge keep and then fired it with straw and pig carcasses. Collapsed one corner of the keep, but they were still able to hold out in part of the keep for a while after. That corner was rebuilt differently afterwards, with a rounded tower and you can see the clear line of the collapse and repair. Very cool to see the evidence of a siege which took place 800+ years ago.

@IanCykowski

Ah, I recognized St. Salvator’s. Did you get to the ruins of the old cathedral, too? When I was there it started out a day like 👆 and then the haar rolled in… the graveyard was incredibly atmospheric (& spooky)!

Great images, Ian. 👏👏👏👏

@ArdentArchivist Ta very much! We did want to check out the cathedral but all access is blocked off; I think they're doing stabilising work on it or something.

@IanCykowski

Ah, too bad. But good that they’re doing the work.
