I'm decentralizing my #social #media.
Email/Calendar: #Proton.me
Browser/Search Engine: #DuckDuckGo
Social Media: #BlueSky & #Mastadon ( #Pixelfed)
TikTok Replacement: #Xiaohongshu
#Spotify Replacement: #SoundCloud
Now to further #decentralize my technology & #media from corrupt/lobbying entities, I need to get #GooglePhotos / #GSuite out of the mix.
Any #suggestions?
@ariareyslay Proton Drive is decent, depending on usecase.
@ariareyslay
Depending on your need. When you said decentralized, I was surprised to find Proton, Bluesky and other centralized services. But they seems like good privacy/anonymity focus solutions.
For the photos, do you need a storage and a web/app specific photo feature?
@kerbafoss that's a fair point about BlueSky. It's more like decentralizing from corporate dominance. Mastodon is a much better option in terms of something actually decentralized.
For photo apps I want storage mostly, but if it comes with awesome photo editing too (like Google Photos) that would be a bonus.
Like James said, I learn not long ago about filen.io but also https://vault.koofr.net/.
I didn't check them a lot but that what I saw that can be useful. If you find something interesting about them, it'll be nice to give a feedback.
@ariareyslay For file storage, https://filen.io/ is a promising newcomer that actually has a Linux client, unlike #Protondrive which I also use.
@jamesgbradbury @ariareyslay #Filen client for Android has problems sadly. It requires DCL (dynamic code loading) enabled on #GrapheneOS. And as it works as content preview app too for remotely stored files it's serious security risk.
And I have a suspicion that their encryption has risk of metadata leakage (filename length, file length) and unattended file movement. But I should look a bit deeply into this.
Afaik, they still didn't pass any external security audit.

@pallenberg thanks for the info! I've since changed after that feedback. I'm trying mailfence.com for now instead.
@ariareyslay Rednote is not at all decentralized. The opposite in fact, it's censored and centrally controlled.
@Sibshops While I acknowledge that as a possibility, TikTok, Meta, and Twitter have all proven to be worse. Also, for the time being, they don't appear to be censoring Americans or American political topics like Luigi Mangione for instance. If you have an app to recommend as a replacement, I'm totally open. For now RedNote has been an interesting sociological experiment for me to engage and participate in.
@ariareyslay I think it's pretty well documented that they are censoring heavily. There are even guides on the r/rednote subreddit on reddit for how to avoid bans.
@Sibshops I'm willing to be proven wrong. I'll look into that further. Either way, I was never planning for it to be my only platform. I would like alternatives, but I haven't received suggestions yet.
@ariareyslay Is Xiaohongshu decentralized?
@devT From American corporate influence, absolutely. In general? No, but I'm pretty sure they're going to be banned soon anyhow. I'm just enjoying the ride and waiting for a better alternative .
@ariareyslay
I use fDroid as my repo of choice but then I've disabled GooglePlayServices and all other Google apps. My gallery is Aves Libre. My keyboard is OpenBoard and many of my other apps come from the 'simple' stable on fDroid
