Raw frame from Blade Runner and how it looks on my color e-ink "very slow movie player" frame. This thing is impossible to photograph because of how reflective the glass is but it looks amazing in person. The color e-ink really looks so cool / very different from a grid of backlit pixels. Wish I could capture it better!
Here's another picture I got of it a while back. Again I can't tell you how hard it is to photograph this thing without it being basically a mirror.
@heavyimage Gasp! LOVE this idea. Where can I learn more about it??
@hiro Thanks! I have a writeup on my soon to be updated website -- I'll try to share a link when it's live. But basically I got one of these (https://shop.pimoroni.com/products/inky-impression-7-3) professionally framed (would love to make own frame in the future) and have a little rpi zero on the back which mounts movie files over NFS from my NAS and pulls frames out according to some rules.
@hiro It's nice cause there's no actual copying of media to the pi (eg on an SD card) or the need to pre-chop into frames -- it just reads directly from the movie over the wifi!
@heavyimage @anji “every frame a painting”, writ large. Beautiful.
@cloudthethings @anji Thanks! I was heavily inspired by some prior art (eg: https://tom-e-white.com/2024/06/very-slow-movie-player.html) so I can't take all the credit but it was fun to build and code!
@heavyimage @anji I think I’d enjoy building something similar! Will have to consult my art director (I mean, wife) @leymoo and see if we can make one!
@cloudthethings @anji @leymoo Good luck! Pimoroni has a new but more expensive 13.3 (!) e-ink display that's also faster to update so you could make one even larger. Keep me posted if you build one!
@heavyimage @anji @leymoo main issue will be availability of a reasonable display on the island here, but worst case we can potentially get something delivered to the U.K. and pick it up.
@cloudthethings @anji @leymoo there are almost certainly other e-ink displays you could use -- def doesn't have to be pimoroni. Have a look here maybe? https://www.waveshare.com/product/displays/e-paper.htm
@cloudthethings @anji @leymoo They're also cool when very small -- I call this one my very bad very small movie player (VBVSMP) -- only like 3-4 inches diagonally
@heavyimage @cloudthethings @leymoo The dithering looks great on this one.
@anji @cloudthethings @leymoo Here's a bit of the trailer (it's actually 3 color display -- black, white and red). Adorable!
This is sped up considerably -- the refresh speeds are bad on e-ink which is why they lend themselves way to these slow players I think!
@anji @cloudthethings @leymoo agreed -- the dithering look is really cool.
@heavyimage @anji @leymoo Robert Mauser (who have a store here) have some of these from a quick search, so it could be good to prototype with!
@cloudthethings @anji @leymoo (happy to share my code but I suspect you'll find writing it part of the fun :-))
@heavyimage yes, please!
