Thinking about giving up the smartwatch...
How Analog Clocks Can Give Us More by Giving Us Less
An analog clock gives you just enough information to keep you tethered to the world without overwhelming you.
@pabloniusmonk
Been rocking a solar Timex Expedition for a while. It’s been great…
It's why I'm returning to the flip phone.
@pabloniusmonk I have a smartwatch that is a watch. It does have a small screen that I use to tell time in the dark.
It does communicate my activity to my phone for health tracking data and it can do other stuff that can be set for activity tracking but it operates like a dial watch for 99.9%. The .1% is when it has to charge every 30 days or so.
It works for me but it has also had me wanting a much nicer watch with zero tech.
@leerayl @pabloniusmonk I now wear a mechanical watch, after being an early fanatic about the Pebble and then the Apple Watch. I'm much happier. (Usually a Dan Henry 1962, fwiw.)
@pabloniusmonk Cool. The Dan Henry 1962 is a Speedmaster "homage" and my only complaint is that they were sold out of the "with date" model when I got mine.
@ben Nice timepiece! And it certainly has the potential to say more about you than your notifications.
@leerayl That sounds like my friend's Withings watch. The upcoming reboot of the Pebble offers a month of battery life too. That's way better than 24 hours, no doubt.
I would consider a smart ring for HR and such. And the Android watch I wear did help me detect some overnight sleep issues that I wouldn't have on my own otherwise.
That being said, I am rediscovering the joys of the simple wristwatch and how it accompanies me throughout the day. I have grown tired of "smart" notifications.
@pabloniusmonk it is a Withings. I will replace it as soon as I can find a nice vintage 40mm pilot with nato band to replace it.
@pabloniusmonk I tried a smartwatch for about two weeks. Then I returned it and replaced it with analog watch. I've since added a Casio digital watch that was state of the art in 1990 to the mix.
@chrisod Casio F91-W‽ I've rehabilitated my Casio digital watches as well. Love them! Even modded my Casio W800H to add the countdown timer and multiple alarms.
@pabloniusmonk had an F91-W but the screen cracked. I replaced with a W217, which is a $30 model with a light that actually illuminates the screen when you need it.
@chrisod Electroluminescent! So much easier to see in the dark. But the word is that Casio is phasing electroluminescent backlights out and going with the LEDs only. The F91-W is still so popular. But its backlight is just so dim!
@chrisod @pabloniusmonk I wore a Casio CD-40 back in 1984. Bought another one recently, but it needs some restoration work before I can wear it.

@pabloniusmonk @chrisod I see a lot of the base calculator ones but I had a hard time finding my CD-40. I must be looking in the wrong spots!
@pabloniusmonk @chrisod I think they still make the CA-53W, right? Or one very similar.
