Has anybody used data?

It is a database of languoids, that is, it contains information on dialects, languages and language families globally, their geographical "ranges", and inter-language relations, and has potential for some pretty cool analyses. Awesome for sure. However, I am unsure how it compares to or data.

@waeiski Unfortunately, #Ethnologue is the only comprehensive database that provides polygon shapefiles for the spread of languages – at that is behind a high paywall. If you come across any database providing those openly, we would be very happy to know!

@sascha_wolfer Good to know. In my current project were mainly focused on the languages spoken between neighboring countries as one determinant of mobility between them.

I read somewhere that ethnologue also has quite often some misclassification when it comes to smaller languages, which Glottolog does not have.

@sascha_wolfer @waeiski I did not know ethnologue had shape files. Too bad it's paywalled indeed!

@smrms @waeiski Minimal information about the dataset can be found here: ethnologue.com/data-consulting ("Language GIS Dataset")

@waeiski I think WALS actually links to glottolog. Glottolog is a catalog of languoids, their various names and relations between languoids, whereas WALS provides information about the language structure (its phonology, grammar, etc), but only for a limited number of languoids. The use of glottolog codes makes it possible to link languoid info between databases, regardless of which name for a languoid they use.

@smrms Thanks for the info! I was aware they were related, but had not found clear information on how and what the differences are!
