In my childhood, I heard stories from the generations prior to me about how serious whooping cough had been for children in their growing-up years, and how children sometimes died of it.

And now it's back, and its reappearance is directly related to vaccine refusal — that is, to people's willingness to believe nonsense and lies, and to show utter disdain for the common good in doing so.
Talk about a society choosing self-destruction, choosing suicide.

@wdlindsy The short answer is STUPID, and likely self-destructive. Not to sound cruel, but these people don’t deserve to succeed. I might’ve used another word.
@wdlindsy My mother - who had an uncle who was wheelchair-bound due to polio - told me about how people lined up for the polio vaccine when it was introduced. "Nowadays nobody remembers how much we used to be afraid of polio. So they don't realize how important the vaccines are."
@flashesofpanic @wdlindsy These are stories that we need to tell our children and grandchildren because they will be removed from the history books. I lost a twin great uncle to polio, and the other twin great uncle suffered the rest of his life with it. It was a miracle that my great grandmother was able to keep him alive.
@wdlindsy You are so right. Some (too many) people have convinced themselves that whooping cough, measles, etc. went away because of natural immunity. They may also have convinced themselves that they are impervious because they are uebermenschen. Vitamin D is great, but priming your immune response without dying is better. But I don't need to tell anybody here that. Sigh.
