Tom<p>As a young, politically engaged <a href="https://tech.lgbt/tags/millennial" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>millennial</span></a> I was a part of a <a href="https://tech.lgbt/tags/progressive" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>progressive</span></a> consensus. That consensus broke down in the 2010's due, in part, to our own naivety.</p><p>We thought our programme was so self-evidently good that only a lunatic fringe would oppose it. It didn't occur to us to worry about the <a href="https://tech.lgbt/tags/LeftBehind" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>LeftBehind</span></a>, when they too would ultimately benefit. They've seen the same studies and consultations that we have, right?</p><p>Even as we railed against <a href="https://tech.lgbt/tags/monoculture" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>monoculture</span></a> and <a href="https://tech.lgbt/tags/privilege" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>privilege</span></a>, we were often blind to our own. Having the time, energy, and knowledge to play at politics is, in our society, only possible for those who enjoy enormous privilege. The <a href="https://tech.lgbt/tags/LiberalElite" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>LiberalElite</span></a> <a href="https://tech.lgbt/tags/Boogeyman" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Boogeyman</span></a> of <a href="https://tech.lgbt/tags/NickGriffin" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>NickGriffin</span></a> and <a href="https://tech.lgbt/tags/PritiPatel" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>PritiPatel</span></a> never existed, but that doesn't mean that a large bloc of progressive <a href="https://tech.lgbt/tags/Xoomers" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Xoomers</span></a> and <a href="https://tech.lgbt/tags/Millenials" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Millenials</span></a> didn't fool ourselves into believing we were far more representative than we were. </p><p>That caught up with us in the early 2010's, and was an important factor in <a href="https://tech.lgbt/tags/Brexit" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Brexit</span></a> and the general shift to the right that we've seen.</p>
