SPCC chief announces imminent go-ahead for Tía María #Bergbau
The executive president of Southern #Peru Copper Corporation announced on 29 September that construction work on Tía María will begin in early 2025. He estimates that the construction phase will last two years. However, SPCC has so far failed to receive the social license for the project to go ahead, and a violent response from neighbouring communities in the Tambo valley in #Arequipa region is to be expected.

The XV International Symposium on Mining, held this week, provided a platform for those seeking to remove obstacles to the development of new mines and to push ahead with those that have been shelved, notably Tía Maria in #Arequipa and Conga in #Cajamarca. When we got to our AirBnB in Arequipa the doorman at the condo complex told us how to get to the roof and said it offered a great view of the city and surrounding countryside. At sunrise the next morning I went up there and discovered he was right!
