Geen menselijkheid, geen solidariteit. Alleen maar ‘wat levert het op?’ Zo’n samenleving is niet alleen kil, die is gevaarlijk. Want als je de meest kwetsbaren afschrijft, wie is dan de volgende? (with translation)

I opened the latest issue of Mother Jones magazine to the editor's column and found an obituary for longtime blogger Kevin Drum, who died of multiple myeloma in March.
https://www.motherjones.com/media/2025/03/kevin-drum-remembrance/
Drum started blogging in 2002, was hired as a blogger by the Washington Monthly in 2004, moved to Mother Jones in 2008, and went back to a personal site at https://jabberwocking.com/ in 2021. I read him daily during the Washington Monthly and Mother Jones days, and drifted away at some point in the mid 2010s, but would still check in from time to time.
His blogs were mostly political and economic posts, often featuring graphs of relevant data, but he also did Friday cat blogging -- possibly he started it? 2000s-era blogs like Kevin were a good source for thoughtful takes that could also be more radical than what the mainstream press would print. It's a shame that social media has largely sidelined such outlets.

Piracy is a symptom, not the actual problem. No guilt, no surrender.
