Hermit crabs often share their shells with smaller critters. A two-tentacled worm lives with this Hairy hermit; it waves its tentacles out of a hole at the rear of the shell. A mobile base gives the worm access to more food. Does it tickle? The hermit doesn't seem to mind. #VancouverIsland #HermitCrabs #IntertidalInvertebrates #Invertebrates #MarineLife #DailyHermit

A Hairy hermit crab in an older shell, painted with dark green algae. Near the rear of the shell there are several small holes; out of one two small white tentacles wave. It's been a while since "Hermy" molted, and he's covered with brown algae; there's even a spot on one antenna. Only his stripy eyes are untouched. On his right, a pink-tipped green anemone is open for business.

Switching shells is a complicated procedure for a hermit crab, whether after a molt or when the present shell is proving uncomfortable. The new shell must be carefully checked inside and out, rolled over, weighed. A hermit crab with a blue-speckled cheliped (pincer) in a whitish shell. Only three more legs and an orange antenna are visible; she's deep inside her present shell. She's holding on to a dark shell, thinking about trying it on. It seems a little smaller than her present shell, but the size of the opening and the condition of the interior walls is what matters to her. On her present shell, there's a spiral calcareous worm and the broken base of another. Below, on the sand, a pink-tipped anemone waves its tentacles.

Next, on top of her, another grainy-hand, facing left, wearing a corroded charcoal-grey shell. And on top, a much smaller hairy hermit, a youngster, facing the camera. He carries his lunch, a creamy shrimp pellet. Beneath the stack are several other shells, ready for the next "shopping" event.

Small Hairy hermit crab in a well-worn periwinkle shell, climbing a blade of bright green eelgrass. The hermit is a yellow/olive shade, with black eyes; her antennae are dotted-line yellowish with white. The shell, up to 2.5 cm. long, and black when new, is coated with green algae.

A hermit crab with orange antennae, red eyes on stalks, and olive-green, blue-spotted legs and pincers. (Hence "granosimanus") He faces the camera, exposing to view some of his sensory and eating tools; grabbers, orange "flags", brushes, etc. He's wearing a well-aged shell, green with encrusted algae. From this angle, the shell looks like a hat with a rolled brim. He's standing on a clump of leafy red algae.

The hardest video to capture was Hermit Crabs. Easy to see, darting around in shallow warm water, but after you overcome screen glare in the bright sun, surface glare, and ripples, the little bugger won't move! #Shazbot!!
