Note: Wikipedia says he was found guilty of throwing a bomb. Howard Zinn says it was a stick of dynamite and he was still on stage when it happened. It was a show trial.
Did you know he was knocked unconscious during his first peaceful protest in New York at the age of 17?
Or that he napalm-bombed a France town in April 1945 at the age of 23?
(Which was probably a turning point for him).

With the tremendous success of his book, A People's History of the United States, Howard Zinn radically changed the way Americans see themselves. His friend Noam Chomsky says that Zinn litteraly transformed a generation's conscience. Zinn talks about those who have no voice in the official History : Slaves, Indians, deserters, textile workers, union men.
“There is a tendency to think that what we see in the present moment we will continue to see. We forget how often in this century we have been astonished by the sudden crumbling of institutions, by extraordinary changes in people's thoughts, by unexpected eruptions of rebellion against tyrannies, by the quick collapse of systems of power that seemed invincible.
To be hopeful in bad times is not just foolishly romantic. It is based on the fact that human history is a history not only of cruelty, but also compassion, sacrifice, courage, kindness.
What we choose to emphasize in this complex history will determine our lives. If we see only the worst, it destroys our capacity to do something. If we remember those times and places—and there are so many—where people behaved magnificently, this gives us the energy to act, and at least the possibility of sending this spinning top of a world in a different direction.
And if we do act, in however small a way, we don't have to wait for some grand utopian future. The future is an infinite succession of presents, and to live now as we think human beings should live, in defiance of all that is bad around us, is itself a marvelous victory.”

My anxiety is through the roof right now. I’m feeling awfully terrified.
So I thought I’d share this quote from Howard Zinn.
Not to negate parallel feelings y’all may be experiencing. But because this is the kind of thing I need right now. And maybe you do, too.
To be honest, I have zero hope. Especially today, when I only want to lie on my back on the floor.
But I want hope. I want to believe that we stand a chance and will survive this. So I’m trying to find words of encouragement from wise people.
When I find encouraging words I will share them with you. Let us strengthen each other if we can.
