"The whole system of finding, diagnosing and treating #tuberculosis has collapsed in dozens of countries across #Africa and #Asia since President #Trump ordered the aid freeze on Jan. 20.

The United States contributed about half of international donor funding to TB last year...

While some of the TB programs may ultimately survive, none have received any money for months."

The New York Times · Tuberculosis Resurgent as Trump Funding Cut Disrupts Treatment GloballyBy Stephanie Nolen

Just went and got another TdaP vaccination, even though my last one was only five years ago and the current recommendation is to get one every ten years.

My reasoning:
- Who knows what vaccination availability will look like in five years.
- Regarding pertussis: "Researchers ... were able to figure out that in the first year after TdaP, its effectiveness is about 70%. By four years out, that protection is less than 10%."

Thanks to @deirdresm for alerting me to the waning pertussis immunity.

Took a couple stickers from CVS while I was at it, although it didn't take any bravery to get this vaccination.

How about some promising Covid-vaccine-related news? It's all early on, but it's still nice to see — and maybe buried amidst all the other news.

"He asked three local churches if he could set up a mobile testing site on their property. They all refused...His team did create a drive-up testing site at a county events building next to the city park, and not far from the Masonic lodge. But he said that it gets very few visitors—about two or three a day. As a result, no one really knows the outbreak’s total size."

The Atlantic · His Daughter Was America’s First Measles Death in a DecadeBy Tom Bartlett
Replied to William Lindsey :toad:

Besides, getting measles isn't the worst thing that can happen to a child. Only 1 to 3 in 1,000 die of measles. And those who die must not have been meant to live; they lacked natural strength and were not fed and exercised properly.

For children who survive measles, the worst that can happen is that they go blind — but at least, they'll have their lives, even if they can no longer see.

I DON'T KNOW WHY PEOPLE THINK WE NEED VACCINES

Wearing asafoedita in a bag around the neck keeps measles at bay. It's a sure preventative.

If you think you need extra protection, sip some water from a holy well while walking widdershins around it and reciting the Lord's prayer backwards.

"WH pulls nomination of Dave Weldon as CDC director hours before hearing."

Encouraging, Trump's pick for the CDC was even too anti-vax for him.

He's promoted anti-vaccine theories for decades -held fast to the belief that vaccines caused autism, even though science has since debunked that theory. In 2007, he introduced a bill to ban thimerosal from vaccines based on a perceived link to autism *removed from all childhood vaccines in the US in 2001.

STAT · White House pulls nomination of Dave Weldon as CDC director hours before hearingThe White House has pulled the nomination of Dave Weldon as CDC director hours before heh was set to appear for his confirmation hearing.

If people who knowingly spread misinformation that directly led to people's deaths could be charged with 2nd-degree murder (and I don't see why they can't!) - I wonder how much that would help stop a lot of this crap.

Making America Sicker and More Ignorant Again

The NIH just cut research grants on dozens of studies, many already in progress, on vaccine hesitancy and strategies to increase vaccine uptake.

Meanwhile, RFKJr's CDC is resurrecting the long disproven link began vaccines and autism and calling for new studies on this already scientifically resolved non issue.

And at the same time, RFKJr is telling people to take snake oil, I mean codfish oil, and antibiotics, to combat measles, though neither of which has any efficacy for that disease.
