In the latest action, employees were instructed to sign a 4-pg letter ordering them to return all #USIP property while agreeing to forgo all future claims against the institute. It ordered them not to disclose any terms of the agreement in exchange for 1 month of #HealthInsurance & a monthly stipend paid for an unspecified period. An overpayment can happen when a beneficiary fails to update a change in income, for instance. Or the #SSA can incorrectly calculate benefits.

In an Aug 2024 report, the SSA's IG estimated the agency made nearly $72B in improper payments – mainly overpayments – during fiscal yrs 2015-2022. That accounted for <1% of all benefits paid during that period, but as of Sept 2023, the agency had $23B in uncollected overpayments….

#SocialSecurity is reinstating its controversial plan to withhold 100% of people's #benefits if the agency has *overpaid* them.

The change reverses a policy that limited withholding to 10%.

Starting Thurs, March 27, the #SSA will reverse its policy involving overpayments to recipients. Sometimes Social Security, which pays benefits to ~70M people monthly, totaling about $1.6T in 2025, pays a beneficiary more money than they should have gotten.
