Heather Wilkinson Rojo<p>Ten years ago I posted many stories on my blog about a series of letters written between Boston and Honolulu in the 1800s. These were family letters I found in the Hawaii State Archives. It was tedious transcribing and posting them. AnneTheWriter<p>One of my favorite moments from estate sales is years ago, when I saw an antique photo in a nice frame. It was a picture of a young couple with a nice horse and buggie. It was being sold for only $40.</p><p>I asked the estate sale lady if they were sure they wanted to sell it. A man came up and said that he was the owner, and yes... it was for sale.</p><p>I looked at him a minute, looked over the photo, then did some quick math.</p><p>"You really shouldn't sell a photo of your Great-Grandparents," I told him. "Whoever buys it is just going to rip out the photo, throw it away, and use the frame."</p><p>"How do you know they're my Great-Grandparents?" he asked. </p><p>"Well..." 🧵 1/2</p><p>[Be sure to also read the <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/AltText" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>AltText</span></a> for information about the posted photos.]</p><p><a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/Genealogy" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Genealogy</span></a> <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/EstateSales" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>EstateSales</span></a> <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/Photographs" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Photographs</span></a> <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/AntiquePhoto" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>AntiquePhoto</span></a> <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/AntiquePhotograph" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>AntiquePhotograph</span></a> <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/VictorianPhotos" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>VictorianPhotos</span></a> <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/IdentifyingOldPhotos" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>IdentifyingOldPhotos</span></a> <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/FamilyTreasures" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>FamilyTreasures</span></a> <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/LostAndFoundPhotos" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>LostAndFoundPhotos</span></a> <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/AuroraIllinois" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>AuroraIllinois</span></a> <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/LocalHistory" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>LocalHistory</span></a> <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/FamilySearch" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>FamilySearch</span></a> <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/Geneadons" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Geneadons</span></a> <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/GenealogyThreads" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>GenealogyThreads</span></a> <span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://a.gup.pe/u/geneadons" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@<span>geneadons</span></a></span></p>
Heather Wilkinson Rojo<p>Part two of a blog story I wrote on July 9th about my 5th great uncle, Captain John Dominis of Trieste, Boston, and Honolulu. Apparently his ancestry was a great mystery to his own family, including his wife, son Governor John Owen Dominis, and daughter-in-law Queen Lilioukalani. The Queen was interested in family history, and spent many hours trying to trace his genealogy. Her reasons for doing so were very interesting! <a href="https://nutfieldgenealogy.blogspot.com/2024/07/the-search-for-ancestry-of-captain-john.html" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">nutfieldgenealogy.blogspot.com</span><span class="invisible">/2024/07/the-search-for-ancestry-of-captain-john.html</span></a> <a href="https://toot.community/tags/genealogy" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>genealogy</span></a> <a href="https://toot.community/tags/FamilyHistory" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>FamilyHistory</span></a> <a href="https://toot.community/tags/history" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>history</span></a> <a href="https://toot.community/tags/geneadons" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>geneadons</span></a></p>

What happened to my 5th great uncle, Captain John Dominis? He disappeared while sailing from Honolulu to China in 1846. Researching his life and death helped me to flesh out this branch of my family. This sad story is still a mystery. Do you ancestors or relatives who disappeared at sea, too? nutfieldgenealogy.blogspot.com #genealogy #FamilyHistory #geneadons #history #hawaii #Boston #NewEngland #newspapers

I was working on a similar lineage this week, of step siblings marrying in the 1700s. I almost wrote a new blog post about the topic, but then remembered I already wrote one about eleven years ago! How many of you have found marriages for step siblings in your family tree? And for the long time bloggers, how many of you have forgotten about blog posts you already wrote years ago? Or am I just getting old? LOL! nutfieldgenealogy.blogspot.com #genealogy #geneadons #FamilyHistory #history
