The dark pattern I hate the MOST is when you pause a show on #Roku and after a while it goes to the screensaver. But it you pick up the remote and hit “play,” it hijacks your selection and thinks you hit play on whatever ad they were showing you in the little billboard on the bottom.

To actually unpause your show you have to hit any other button to get back to the show before unpausing.

Does anybody sell a dumb streaming box outside of Roku ? Like I want to be install Netflix as an app and watch it on my TV. But I otherwise dont want to login to google/amazon/apple ?

Failing that is their a #Floss solution here that would also be low maintenance and user friendly on my family.

Folks who want to hold off the escalating enshitification of Roku and keep their home screen working as originally intended, i.e. a place from which to launch apps to stream video, you should block

cloudservices.roku.com

in addition to using the Smart-TV Blocklist at

perflyst.github.io/PiHoleBlock

for various "smart TV" platforms and streaming services (not specifically Roku).

Maybe my tinfoil hat is too tight.. but in my experience when I electronics die they generally die or do weird things like lines or static yada yada.. there's a little man in my head telling me my Roku TV is too old for them to play with and they sent me a kill switch.

If you notice it blinks on and everything is fine the brightness the screen and then it blinks off.

Probably just my wild imagination but it's just a little weird and I'm at the point I don't trust them anymore..

First start on allowing users to manually connect to an #owncast server from the #roku client.

So, so good.

You can click the button, enter a URL, and it saves the data to the Roku, allowing you to access the channel without having to type in the URL every time.

Much work still left to do, but it has begun!
