I have found a seedling #narcissus this week. It's a cyclamineus classification with ivory white refelxed petals and a long pale fluted corona with some darker markings. I have decided to call it Greenfield Ghost because it was found growing outside our garden gate next to our garden wall.

Mahonia. Against a blurry green background, a cluster of bright yellow flowers and greenish buds. When the garden was planted, 40 years ago, several species of Mahonia were included. This plant is a volunteer, and so is likely a hybrid.

Muscari x armeniacum, grape hyacinth cultivar. In the foreground one spike of flowers, each of which is a tiny cerulean bell hanging from the stem by a short pedicel. The lower ones are open; the opening has a narrow white rim.

Narcissus hybrid, daffodil. Tepals long and narrow, standing straight out, creamy yellow with a slightly darker midrib. Corona short, wide, ruffled, golden yellow. A bit similar to N. 'Jack Snipe' but larger. Blurry background of leaves and more flowers. Here and there a few raindrops.

Prunus hybrid, tiny yellow plums. Nearest us, a couple of twiggy branches, with many small white flowers typical of plums, fiver ovate petals, prominent white and gold stamens. Blurry background includes more of the tree and some sky and grass. This tree was either a volunteer, or the root stock took over. It bloom and fruits very early, before any of the other plums.

First grid of daffodils for the great daffodil gathering of 2025.

These are all out in our garden right now, and most of them appeared in the last few days! 15 varieties so far, and it'll be interesting to see what else appears over the coming weeks!

1. In the forground a corymb of small white flowers on delicate pedicels, each with four petals, fused at the base. It's on a stem with one leaf showing. In the background are many more. Pachyphragma macrophyllum. The references all say it has an unpleasant scent but I find it enchanting and unexpected - rather like bitter almonds.

2. Background of blurry leaves. A single stem bearing several nodding, intense blue flowers with prominent blue stamens and a large green ovary in the middle. Scilla siberica.

3. A cluster of many small blue flowers with six petals, periwinkle blue at the distal and shading in to white. The stamens are contained in a complicated tube structure in the center and the ovary is not visible. Blurry leaves in BG. Used to just be called Chinodoxa, now, Scilla sect. Chinodoxa, probably the species luciliae.

4. A single classic trumpet type daffodil, narrow deep gold trumpet and golden petals. Blurry leaves in BG. It's an old Cyclamineus cultivar, Narcissus 'February Gold'.
