:boosts_ok_gay: (79/600) URGENT mutual aid, food/med insecurity

We're a week into April and we're $521 short of budget. We have one dr appointment done but two more coming up quickly. On top of that, the other clinic, with sliding scale, is giving us the runaround for basic shit so we may have to transfer our prescriptions and basic care to the new one.

We are permanently disabled and neurodivergent. and between two bodies we are living on one set of benefits. It's very expensive to have so little money.

For immediate help:
paypal.me/ramavabray

Fast, no frills, no fees.

Monthly recurring:
patreon.com/ifwhen

The hope is to get the patreon to a point where we don't have to ask for additional aid each month. So far it's up to $58 (~56 after fees). Also a great option if you love our music and art, or are curious about our game.

Please give if you can and :boosts_ok_gay: boost! You're saving our lives here.

Thank you all so much for reading.

:boosts_ok_gay: Urgent mutual aid (63/600) food/med insecurity

edit: Thank you so much to everyone giving, it means a lot. And our Patreon supporters get an extra special thanks.

Tried to switch to a new server, but I just don't seem to get the reach/reaction, so it gets reposted here. I guess we'll use both accounts now? Please boost, please help. We have 2 more doctor appointments this month.

68/600

It's May, and we need help to make budget. Going to try to budget for $600. Gonna have to get to the clinic a couple of times and schedule to get my teeth fixed, plus pay for medicine, supplies, and food.

We're a poor, disabled, queer family living in a crumbling house on one tiny income, which is a really expensive life to live.

We're also working on a game, and would like to put as much time toward it as possible.

You can help!

Immediate one-time help:

Monthly pledge:

Please :boosts_ok_gay: boost, and if you can, give. We need your assistance and you'll be saving our lives.

finished reading The Collected Schizophrenias: Essays 🌕🌕🌕🌕🌑
Essays on the author's experience of schizophrenia (along with bipolar, PTSD & chronic Lyme!) in the US. Fascinating & unsettling view into psychiatric hospitals, mental health 'support' in Ivy League colleges, and what the hell a psychotic break feels like. Blimey.

#Lectin-free #Brunch | Tue. 25 Feb.

A dish that speaks of patience and precision—my mum’s braised herring, gently simmered and left overnight to reach perfection. The fillets, infused with deep umami and a delicate sweetness, were exquisitely tender, yielding effortlessly with each bite. A refined harmony of flavours, turning a simple meal into something truly special. Slow cooking at its finest.

I understand everything about my mom now.

I realize now I am exactly like her, and had the same #tourettes the whole time, I just didn't know until 27.

She thought she had #schizophrenia and was misdiagnosed, and I was too as a result due to family history.

The fidgeting, and things she toyed with. The martial arts, the never ending #workout or walks, the amazing dancing, and gorgeous #art.

Always moving.

She learned to cope naturally.

Then I learned too and lived.

Congratulations to Laramie Duncan and #Stanford collaborators on publishing "Mapping the cellular etiology of schizophrenia and complex brain phenotypes" in @natureneuro !

Combining brain-wide genetics and transcriptomics analyses implicated different cell types in #schizophrenia (e.g., retrosplenial excitatory and striatal MSN) versus other disorders (e.g., D2 MSN in alcohol consumption). Excited to explore and learn more with this promising new approach...

www.nature.comMapping the cellular etiology of schizophrenia and complex brain phenotypes | Nature NeurosciencePsychiatric disorders are multifactorial and effective treatments are lacking. Probable contributing factors to the challenges in therapeutic development include the complexity of the human brain and the high polygenicity of psychiatric disorders. Combining well-powered genome-wide and brain-wide genetics and transcriptomics analyses can deepen our understanding of the etiology of psychiatric disorders. Here, we leverage two landmark resources to infer the cell types involved in the etiology of schizophrenia, other psychiatric disorders and informative comparison of brain phenotypes. We found both cortical and subcortical neuronal associations for schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and depression. These cell types included somatostatin interneurons, excitatory neurons from the retrosplenial cortex and eccentric medium spiny-like neurons from the amygdala. In contrast we found T cell and B cell associations with multiple sclerosis and microglial associations with Alzheimer’s disease. We provide a framework for a cell-type-based classification system that can lead to drug repurposing or development opportunities and personalized treatments. This work formalizes a data-driven, cellular and molecular model of complex brain disorders. Duncan and colleagues link specific human brain cell types to schizophrenia and other complex brain phenotypes, providing mechanistic insights and a cellular taxonomy for psychiatric disorders.

Mental Illness Gets One Killed in the U.S.A.

"People are fed up with the way our society fails to address mental illness and places that duty on an average citizen, which is what Penny was when he found himself confronted with Neely on that subway car. It’s a societal problem that Penny was forced to deal with, without society’s resources." -- Adanté Pointer, Civil Rights Attorney

My questions for Pointer: Did anyone really place that duty on Daniel Penny? Was Daniel Penny really forced to deal with a situation by physically confronting the late victim? Is it really a failure of our society, or a failure by us, who cheapen the lives of persons with no-fault serious mental illnesses by our attitudes?

PBS reports elsewhere that the late "Jordan Neely was unarmed, with nothing but a muffin in his pocket, and didn't touch any passengers on the train." He did not hurt anyone. He did not touch anyone. He is the only one who got hurt. So with the knowledge that Penny was killing Jordan Neely, would jurors have thought it justified self-defense if Neely had fought back and killed Penny for initiating the physical confrontation? Doubtful.

Some of my fellow citizens are willing to donate $3 million to Daniel Penny for what they must think of as heroic service in snuffing out the life of a homeless person afflicted with schizophrenia. Are they really fed up with the way we fail to address mental illness? Or would they just rather pay for vigilantism than for better mental health services?

"The effect of seeing scientists as intellectually humble on trust in scientists and their research" nature.com/articles/s41562-024 on the other hand, humility doesn't help us get through the evaluation and funding application stages (where we're constantly asked to prove that we're the best, that our work is incredible) or the awards stage (yes, to get awards, you often have to apply for them, and therefore submit a dossier, etc.) #schizophrenia

NatureThe effect of seeing scientists as intellectually humble on trust in scientists and their research - Nature Human BehaviourAcross five pre-registered studies, Koetke et al. find that perceptions of scientists’ intellectual humility positively affect the perceived trustworthiness of scientists and their research.

I hate labels, they're so limiting, often with unfair nagative connotations and never do adequately define us -

A sprinkling of; "schizophrenia, bipolar, autism, aspergers, psychosis, neurosis, delirium."

I actually probly have a little bit of all this ! we all do if we're honest. There is
( thank goodness ) no such damn thing as normal.
