When Balkanians want to say that they're not naive and that you can't fool them, they say: "Nisam ja veslo sisala", which means "I haven't sucked an oar". But if someone has already fooled them once, they might say "Možda jesam sisala veslo, ali nisam progutala čamac" - "Perhaps I have sucked an oar, but I haven't swallowed a boat" #croatian #serbian #bosnian #bcms #language #lesson

"There is no one born under a bad star, there are only people who cannot read the sky."

At home, this summer, a nice circumpolar above a church.

Ok, due to huge success and additional info found, I extended table to cover more Slavic month names. It is also perfect example why our languages are not very mutually intelligible: same words often have shifted meaning.

EN = UA [romanized] = CZ = HR = PL

January=січень[siczen|sičeň]👈= leden=siječanj👈= styczeń👈
February=лютий[liutiy|ljutij]👈=únor=veljača=luty👈
March=березень[berezeň]👈=březen👈=ožujak=marzec 🏛️
April=квітень[kviteň]👈=duben=travanj🤔 = kwiecień👈
May=травень[traveň]🤔=květen🤔(máj 🏛️)=svibanj=maj 🏛️
June=червень[czerven|červeň]👈=červen👈=lipanj🤔=czerwiec🤔
July=липень[lipeň]🤔=červenec🤔=srpanj🤔=lipiec
August=серпень[serpeň]👈= srpen👈=kolovoz=sierpień👈
September=вересень[vereseň]👈=září=rujan🤔=wrzesień👈
October=жовтень[zhovten|žovteň]=říjen🤔=listopad🤔=październik
November=листопад[listopad]👈=listopad👈 =studeni=listopad👈
December=грудень[grudeň]👈=prosinec🤛=prosinac🤛=grudzień👈

year=рік[rik]👈=rok👈=godina🤔=rok👈
hour=година[hodina]👈=hodina👈=sat=godzina👈

Notes:
-lipaň/lipiec ~ červen/červenec? 🤔
-kolovoz sounds cool in Czech :masto_wink:
-studeni is very intelligible, but well, entire winter is "studená", "studené období" :-)
-rujan is also Czech name for peninsula on German coast of Baltic sea (Rügen), historically inhabited by Slavic tribes, but may be close to Czech říjen? (+shift by one month again? who is right? I had thought about "říjen" month maybe related to "Rujána" island before...)
-Croats got years and hours all wrong! Those relaxed southern Mediterranians :masto_wink: (but yes, it seems related to "god" for "year" is same with Russian)

The Visovac Monastery is a Franciscan (Roman Catholic) monastery located on a tiny islet in Visovac Lake inside Krka National Park. It was founded in the 14th century, and the complex was expanded in 1445. It is one of Croatia’s most important historical, cultural, and religious centres. I recommend to visit it if you travel to Croatia !

Mist in North Velebit, Croatia. North Velebit National Park is the newest park in Croatia. The area was chosen thanks to its particular geology and the richness of its biodiversity. I took this photo during a photo trip. Croatia is a small country but very, very beautiful. It's a pristine place with incredible nature still preserve.

How I did this photo ? Canon 5D Mark IV 400 mm f5,6 1/1000e f9 Iso 50. No filter. High Key.

(EN) I know that the Serbo-Croatian word "novac" (money) comes from "novi pinez" (new money, with pinez being an older word for money, still used in some dialects and also in related languages such as Czech). But when was the word "novac" first used, and what was the new money they're talking about?

The letter Đ was introduced to Serbo-Croatian by Đuro Daničić, according to Wikipedia. I found that highly amusing, that he introduced the letter that is the first letter in his name.

Wikipedia also claims that he was born Đorđe Popović, and all I can think of is "nah, that can't be right".

That would be like Jebediah Springfield who was born in a cabin that he helped build.

Vladimir Nazor is likely the most famous author from the island of Brač, the island my parents are from. His most acclaimed book seems to be Pastir Loda, Loda the Shepherd. It tells the story of a satyr that, through accidents and storms, was stranded on the island of Brač, and how he lived on Brač for the next almost two thousand years.
