Now that I've finished my latest miniatures project, I need a new interest. I've decided I'm going to come back to my teenage obsession and try to learn some #Finnish! I'm not planning on fluency, but enough to get by.
When I was 15, I became obsessed with Formula 1. I was a Villeneuve fan, but the championship was between Schumacher and #Häkkinen, so I rooted for Häkkinen and somehow that led to me wanting to learn Finnish.
But this was in the days of dialup and I wasn't allowed online without permission. There was no YouTube, no lessons on tap. If I wanted a Finnish study book, I would have to put in an order at a bookshop. Too scary! So I copied out the verb table for on and how to say "have" (which uses the same construction as Gujarati, so that was an easy concept to learn), I learnt a few nouns, and that was about as far as I got. Someone online told me "tere" was a casual way of saying terve.

Estonian is a close relative of Finnish, and one of my Estonian friends once said: Estonian? Oh, that's dead simple, Russian, that is complicated! I literally couldn't stop laughing and I still count this as one of the best jokes I've ever heard (but he was serious). #Languages

Swearing, the frivolous beauty of casual Finnish language
Sometimes you just go about your morning and someone in the group chat uses an expression that hits you like a bean bag filled with sudden hilarity. This time it was "persreiätön äpärä" where äpärä means bastard, persreikä is arsehole. And when you're reiätön you're sans hole, and thus it means that you are a bastard that has been slowly filling up with shit since the moment of birth, and are thus spewing it about no matter what you do. You are that full of shit, of ignominious birth, and nobody even wanted to recognise you. It's also a fun thing to say to Moomintroll since he is drawn without one.
Finnish swearing: colourful, effective, concise, with multiple layers, respectful to tradition, just sounds fun to say!
